It starts at 9am on TV One. Te Wiwi Nati will be opening the show followed by an interview with He Kura Te Tangata Trustee Pae Ruha and National Coordinator Puti Mackey.

Here’s a korero from Pae Ruha about Kaumatua Kapa Haka:

“In the days when kaumatua were very much around they welcomed, sang and entertained, using the kapa haka style of that era and requiring very little rehearsal time. Today Kaumatua kapa haka are preparing to present the compositions of those respected composers of the past.and it is great that Te Papa is again hosting the two day programme

“At a time when there was every possibility that we would lose our language and culture, Sir Apirana Ngata created a life line which became known as the"modern Māori action song.' His clever use of the pop tunes of the day, and the match up of Māori lyrics caught on so much so, that at the forefront of the revival came Tuini Ngawai, Kohine Ponika and many other composers.

It would be true to say that Apirana Ngata mentored both Tuini and Kohine. One of Tuini's songs is a lament type song, "Auē, Tā Apirana," Kohine, in one of her compositions for the Centennial celebrations of the Mataatua waka, included a plea to her mentor,"E Koro Apirana....."

Some of the Kaumātua Kapa Haka will be presenting works from early composers such as Kingi Tahiwi and Paraire Tomoana, contemporaries of Sir Apirana Ngata. He Kura Te Tangata Charitable Trust salutes Sir Apirana Ngata and all those wonderful composers whose compositions will ring out across at Te Papa and across the world on 11 and 12 July.”

Check out the live webcast at tepapa.govt.nz/kapahaka

<sites:pageName>checkoutkaumatuakapahakaonthe‘goodmorning’show</sites:pageName><sites:revision>1</sites:revision>

Kaumātua Kapa Haka – Live on Broadband!

Nine groups from around the country will be gathering at the national museum in Wellington for a weekend of magical performances.
FINE ACT: Vera Morgan, 92, led her kapa haka group to rapturous applause at Te Papa's Matariki celebrations. "My grandkids say: 'You're wonderful Nana.'"

Nobody puts Aunty Vera in the corner. At 92, the veteran performer led her kapa haka group to rapturous applause as they took to the stage at Te Papa yesterday.

Despite being led to a waiting seat while her group performed, Vera Morgan was front and centre during the kaumatua kapa haka to close the museum's Matariki celebrations.

"I didn't want to sit. I just want to be in the flow of people, but they gave me a seat just because I'm old - but I'm quite capable," she said.

Mrs Morgan, who just 18 months ago suffered two strokes, said performing with her community moved her to tears. "It was emotional and beautiful, I just feel like crying. It's joyous - there are so many stories to tell."

She was joined by more than 260 kaumatua who performed at Te Papa to celebrate Matariki.
It provides a platform for our senior performers to demonstrate their well-honed skills, it allows people to witness the way famous Māori compositions were meant to be performed and it’s a wonderful gathering to be part of it.“

Pae Ruha has named the trust, “He Kura Te Tangata” in recognition that Kaumātua Kapa Haka is about treasuring the contribution of senior Māori performers. Pae has also chosen the name to complement the concept of ‘He Kuru Pounamu’, which refers to the ancestral treasures, or the musical compositions created by famous Māori composers who have since passed on.

Kiritokia E Te Tomairangi Paki has been appointed as Te Manu Taupua (Patron) of “He Kura Te Tangata” Trust. Tomairangi is the second daughter of the late Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu and sister to Kingi Tuheitia. Tomairangi is an accomplished performer, cultural director, choreographer and leader of Taniwharau.

The inaugural trust members are Mamae Takerei (Waikato-Taniwharau), Pae Ruha (Te Whānau-ā-Apanui), Tama Huata (Ngāti Kahungunu), Julie Dwyer (Te Whanganui-a-Tara) and a trustee from Ngāi Tahu which is to be confirmed.
