Nine groups from around the country will be gathering at the national museum in Wellington for a weekend of magical performances. The senior Māori performing groups will close Te Papa’s 18 day Matariki programme for 2009. The performing groups come from the Auckland Anglican Māori Club (Auckland), Te Whānau a Kohine Ponika (Auckland-Bay of Plenty), He Kura ki Waikato (Waikato), Taranaki ki te Tonga (Taranaki), Te Hokowhitu-a-Tū (Gisborne), Ngāti Kahungunu (Hawkes Bay-Wairarapa), Te Rōpū Tahiwi (Wellington), Wīwī Nāti (Wellington-based) and Te Whānau (Wellington-based). Each kaumātua group will perform items from one or several iconic composers including Sir Kingi Ihaka, Princess Te Puea Herangi and Tuini Ngawai. If you can’t make it to Te Papa, don’t stress. All you need is access to a computer with a broadband connection. The entire weekend of performances will be streamed live on the internet, with the support of TelstraClear, to communities around the world. So tell your family and friends around the world so they can be part of this remarkable event.
